The Importance of Dress for a Job Interview

While dressing appropriately for a job interview may sound like common sense, you would be surprised by the number of people who fail to do it. A recent study found that many applicants are showing up to job interviews wearing sneakers, sweatpants, and jeans.

Does the way you act during an interview really have a bearing on whether or not you will be hired? The answer to this question is yes. If the person interviewing you doesn't care how you act or dress, you shouldn't want to work for them. Even if you are qualified for the job, an employer wants to make sure you have the personal qualities which are required to succeed. Having a lot of skill is not enough. Even if you have an advanced degrees or a lot of experience, employers will be reluctant to hire someone who can't work with a team, has bad habits, or doesn't dress appropriately.
While dressing correctly may not be important for some jobs, most professional, high paying jobs expect you to have a good appearance. Even if the job isn't the best in the world, obtaining it will still allow you to keep a roof over your head. In addition to this, how will you be able to determine whether or not the interviewer will base their decision on your appearance? Unless you already know them, there is no way you can. Because of this, it is best to dress professionally at all times. If you aren't sure about the dress code for the company, dress your best anyway. Even if you are not required to wear a suit at the job, showing up in one will send a message that you care about how you look, and this will likely translate into your work.
