Identifying hazards in your workplace

A hazard is anything with the potential to cause harm. The risk is the likelihood that someone could be harmed by that hazard together with an indication of how serious the harm could be. The law doesn't require you to eliminate all risk, but you are required to protect people as far as is 'reasonably practicable'.

The first stage of a risk assessment is to look for hazards. A hazard can be something easily seen, such as a trailing cable, a worn carpet or exposed wiring. Or it can be something less obvious - a slippery surface, for example.

It can be something general, such as poor lighting. Or it can be something specific to your business, such as the particular hazardous substances you use. See our guides on how to manage harmful substances safely and your responsibilities for health and safety.

A hazard can be something directly affecting your employees, such as exposure to bacteria - or something affecting the environment in general, such as your waste materials.

You should distinguish between:

workplace hazards, such as a workshop's layout
activity hazards, such as using grinding machinery in your workshop
environmental hazards, such as the dust created when using grinding machinery

When looking for hazards it can be helpful to:

walk around your business
talk to employees who may be more aware of your business' hazards than you
look at safety data sheets and manufacturers' instructions to identify potential problem areas
examine accident and health records to identify existing problem areas

you should not do it before six months old.

What arguments can I give?

A reasonable increase ranges between 20% and 30%, but it's certainly the company's policies

Where do I start the conversation?
Find the right time. Begin the conversation with ease and poses the question in simple sentences, but direct: "I plantearte a proposal", "to talk to you", "How good that now we can talk."

What if the answer is no?
If you say no, you should take it calmly.

Unemployment surges around the world

The United States government announced that employers cut another 651,000 jobs last month, driving unemployment up to 8.1 percent. Job losses in December and January were even higher than previously reported.

The pain is being felt well beyond the United States.

In Asia, in China, the urban unemployment rate officially stands at 4.2 percent. However, the Chinese Academy of Social Scientists says it is closer to 9.4 percent. In China, rural unemployment is not measured because of the difficulty of doing so.

Also in Asia, in Japan, unemployment hit 4.4 percent by the end of 2008, rising at its fastest rate in 42 years. Growing lines at food banks have been one result.

In India, unemployment officially stands at 8.2 percent. However, that number is thought to largely reflect unemployment in the organized sector of the economy, which comprises just 10 percent of the country’s workforce.

In Africa, in South Africa, economists expressed “surprise” as the unemployment rate fell to 21.9 percent at the end of last year, down from 23.2 percent several months earlier.
In Europe, unemployment in Germany stands at 8.5 percent, and in Britain, it is 6.1 percent, the highest in ten years.

In Latin America, Mexico’s unemployment rate is 4.3 percent. However, anyone in Mexico who is 14 years or older and who has worked one hour a week is considered “employed.”

There are hundreds of ideas that you can use to start your own business and be successful but if you don't know what to look for, you can't make that decision to be your own boss.

When You Should Quit Your Job

There are a number of reasons why you may want to quit your job. While quitting a job is typically seen as being negative to most people, there are situations in which leaving your job for good is the best option. In the end, it is best to look out for your own welfare. If your job requires you to work too many hours, or you find that you're unhappy with what you're doing, it is time to start making plans to quit.

One situation in which you may want to quit your job is when it is losing a large number of sales or customers. If this continues, it is likely that the company may begin laying of workers. Instead of waiting for the company to file for bankruptcy, looking for another job while you're still employed can be a great way to find a new job without missing a paycheck. If you have got into a bad situation with your manager which is difficult to deal with, this is another sign you may want to find another job. This situation could be attributed to either of you.Perhaps you or your boss have demonstrated that you are dishonest, or perhaps you have missed a large number of days at work. If you find that your boss is constantly irritating you, this is another reason you may want to quit.

If you are not happy with the work you are doing, it is unlikely you will stay with the company. It is better for you to leave on your own instead of waiting for them to fire you. Sometimes we have changes in our lives which require us to change jobs. An example of this could be a marriage or pregnancy. The salary of the job may not be high enough to support the lifestyle you want.

If you are planning on starting a family, you will want to find a job which can allow you to support them. One reason why many people decide to quit their jobs is because they become opposed to the operations or business practices of the company they work for. If the company doesn't allow the employees to speak their minds, or people are promoted based on office politics rather than skills, this can create an environment which is uncomfortable to work in. A lot of employees also feel that they are underpaid.

Statistics show that salaries are the primary reason why people change jobs. It is also the most important factor that people will look at when considering a job. When you are first hired at a company, it can be exciting because you are working in a new environment. After a while, some people tend to become bored or unhappy with what they're doing. They may feel a sense of dread each morning when they have to get up and go to work. If you are in this situation, it is time for you to begin looking for another job. You shouldn't sacrifice your physical or mental health just to earn a paycheck.

The Importance of Dress for a Job Interview

While dressing appropriately for a job interview may sound like common sense, you would be surprised by the number of people who fail to do it. A recent study found that many applicants are showing up to job interviews wearing sneakers, sweatpants, and jeans.

Does the way you act during an interview really have a bearing on whether or not you will be hired? The answer to this question is yes. If the person interviewing you doesn't care how you act or dress, you shouldn't want to work for them. Even if you are qualified for the job, an employer wants to make sure you have the personal qualities which are required to succeed. Having a lot of skill is not enough. Even if you have an advanced degrees or a lot of experience, employers will be reluctant to hire someone who can't work with a team, has bad habits, or doesn't dress appropriately.
While dressing correctly may not be important for some jobs, most professional, high paying jobs expect you to have a good appearance. Even if the job isn't the best in the world, obtaining it will still allow you to keep a roof over your head. In addition to this, how will you be able to determine whether or not the interviewer will base their decision on your appearance? Unless you already know them, there is no way you can. Because of this, it is best to dress professionally at all times. If you aren't sure about the dress code for the company, dress your best anyway. Even if you are not required to wear a suit at the job, showing up in one will send a message that you care about how you look, and this will likely translate into your work.
